Ethel Spicer + Frances Bank

Spicer + Bank are the maiden names of my two wonderful grandmothers and I wanted to share my favorite image of them both and a bit about how they inspire me both in design and life!

Ethel Spicer Katz, here with my grandfather and their first child, my mother, circa 1949. I adore her dark wavy hair and that bold damask wall covering in the background. Her endless energy, deep curiosity, and striking design sense continue to inspire me. Ever the style maker, in 1966 she did her living room in vibrant yellow, white, and black with Chinese decorative details - so chic.

Frances Bank Feldman, with my grandfather, circa 1950. Her family owned a photography studio in Minneapolis. They took the photos in black and white and then afterwards artists, sometimes my grandma and her sisters, applied the color on top. I love her ruby hued lips and the soft tones of the pastels; I think we would all look a bit more glamorous if photos were still done like this! She was a true independent sprit with a incredible outlook on life. The always positive ruled for her and she taught me never to worry about what others thought but to act as an individual and follow my heart!

Thanks for letting me share a bit about me . . . What inspires you?

Aww I love vintage photos. Your grandmothers are stunning! Isn’t it amazing that grandparents can be so young and youthful? It’s like by looking at those pictures, it’s hard to imagine them being grandparents! Thanks for sharing.
