Form + Function: Bookcase Walls

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

Maybe it's because I am a nerd at heart {oh how I loved school} but I just adore the look of a wall filled with books! There is something so cozy and so personal about bookcases and I especially like when they are integrated into the architecture of the space itself. In addition to being fantastic storage, these full blown shelves are also a wonderful way to add texture and color to a space. I also wanted to share a few tips to the styling a beautiful bookcase:

{1} Be sure to incorporate decorative objects, vases and small pieces of art (look for items with a unique shape)
{2} Stack some books horizontally and some vertically, and allow others to lean. This makes for a more interesting dynamic and also prevents it from looking like a library!
{3} Keep those paperbacks - many designers avoid old books but I love the patina and the eclectic feel of books old and new together.
{4} Don't worry about it looking perfect! One of my favorite things about a huge bookcase is you can re-arrange, experiment and add items over time.
