Beauties on a Budget: H&M Home

Friday, February 28, 2014

I have many years experience sorting through H&M's racks for fashion steals, so I was so excited to discover that H&M also carries a fantastic home decor line! I might be a decor addict, but I love an interior that is dynamic and changes with time, and switching out affordable accessories and textiles is the best way to achieve this look. Right now they have a really fun selection of graphic textiles, vintage inspired storage pieces, and metallic finishes. Here are my fav picks of the moment - and the best news is pretty much everything is under $30!

And a few more lovely shots from their site . . . well done H&M!

Instant Style: Upholstered Screens

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Versatile, dramatic and oh-so-practical - upholstered screens are one amazing design trick! Screens are perfect for dividing a room, covering an unsightly corner, corralling a bulky mess, or adding much needed architectural character to a space. Plus, the upholstered surface helps absorb sound and creates a warm feel. Folding screens are especially wonderful for rental spaces, where removing that ugly pipe or building a study nook just might not be possible. I think a solid linen accented with nail heads is a gorgeous choice, but a screen can also be a brilliant opportunity to bring in a burst of lively pattern!

Here is bit of inspiration. . . .

Little Green Notebook has an amazing DIY here! And if you loved the chevron print screen + bulletin board above as much as me . . . here is the Design Sponge instructions to make your very own.

But if you are not the DIY type, this beauty from World Market here is a steal at US$199! Or if you have a little more to spend, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams makes this lovely and classic version.

DIY Decor: Cozy Gallery Corner

Thursday, February 13, 2014

I love a gallery wall but instead of picking an expected space, like the long wall over a sideboard, today's DIY inspiration is to create a cozy gallery corner! Corners usually are neglected or a bit awkward for displaying art but by working with loads of smaller pieces, you can quickly create a layered, bohemian vibe. The best part is the frames and art pieces do not have to match, I love the look of the combination of textures, colors and artistic mediums. Perfect for displaying travel photos, Etsy artist finds, a favorite family snapshot or flea market pieces!

When building a gallery wall, I lay out all the pieces I have and then start at the center and work outwards. I think it's important to do this organically and do not worry if the edges of pieces line up - in fact better if they do not! It's wonderful to add pieces to your gallery corner over time, but I suggest starting with at least 6 or 7 frames to achieve the look.

Hope this inspires you to spice up a lonely corner in your house!

House Tour: Vintage Flair in Greenwich Village

Monday, February 10, 2014

If matchy and cookie cutter interiors are not your style, then I know you will be just as inspired as I am by this quirky NYC pad! The Greenwich Village apartment is bursting with fantastic art, unique flea market finds and a huge dose of personality. It is the home of Kyle DeWoody, co-founder of funky New York design and art boutique Grey Area. The simple backdrop of classic yet modern pieces lets the loads of unusual and kooky objects really shine. And while a few of the pieces might seem a bit over the top, I love the overall effect of this eclectic and layered space!

A magenta over-dyed rug adds a gorgeous depth of color to the living area.

The dining room boasts a unique collection of vases, sculptures and even a stuffed rabbit!

I adore the idea of framing a collection of vintage photos and postcards as one piece of art.

To top it off, DeWoody is only 27 years old - I would love to see her collection in 30 years!
