Pumpkin Crazed: Happy Halloween!

Thursday, October 31, 2013

Hope you are all having a wonderful and spooky halloween! I know the craze for all things pumpkin is in full swing, so in honor of the day, I am sharing these 3 delicious looking pumpkin recipes. I love the idea of savoury & sweet treats!

Do you have any favorite pumpkin recipes?

Pumpkin Toffee Gooey Bars here

Pumpkin Spice Popcorn here ... like fall inspired kettle corn! Crunchy, salty and sweet.

This Spice Roasted Pumpkin with Burrata here looks so amazing and comforting. My mom always roasts acorn squash in the fall and winter and I bet it would work beautifully here as well!

Happy Halloween Everyone!

Designer Tip: Bold, Striped Headboards

Tuesday, October 22, 2013

Did you know that the US, Singapore, Australia all have different size mattresses? Totally unimportant info for some of you, but as a designer in Singapore working with tons of expats, this is driving me mad! My solution? Create custom headboards and bed frames for each client so any 'nationality' of mattress will fit perfectly! I love working with my upholsterer here to design custom beds, and how each bed can be customized with exactly the scale, style, fabric and special detailing I want. Usually we select a solid fabric but lately I am loving the idea of a bold striped headboard! A striped headboard is a great way to add instant visual interest and graphic appeal to a bedroom and stripes also pair so beautifully with more organic patterns {such as the floral print above}!

Here is a little of my inspiration . . .

If you can't have one custom made, there are some beautiful retail options out there too!

I also love this one from Target and this beauty from Horchow. And if you living in SGP and fancy a custom headboard just drop me a line!

Office Tour: Lucky's Eva Chen

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Today I am so inspired by the amazing office of Lucky editor Eva Chen featured in the new Domino {it's a bit different than the original shelter mag which folded 4 years ago and is more of an online shop, but I am still thrilled they are back!} Offices can end up so sterile and utilitarian but Chen's work space oozes layered sophistication and charm. It feels so personal and lovely yet also so professional - a perfect balance!

Here's why it works:

{1} Modern office pieces (like the glossy white desk) are paired with vintage elements (like those fantastic midcentury visitors chairs) for a wonderful juxtaposition.

{2} The color palette is overall muted and monochromatic with just a few pops of vibrant pink, lemon yellow and cornflower blue for a bolt of energy.

{3} Metallic elements throughout lend a bit of modern glamour and prevent the space from feeling flat.

I could certainly work here! How about you?

Etsy Find: Eye Poetry Photography

Thursday, October 10, 2013

As many of you well know, I am addicted to souring Etsy for paintings, art prints and photographs for my clients {I can literally spend hours at a clip!} And how could I not be when I find gems like Eye Poetry Photography? It features the work of Montreal based artist Irene Suchocki and I especially love her shots of architecture, parks and cityscapes. They are modern and fresh yet there is always something so dreamy and peaceful about each one. I think the way she experiments with focus is so engaging and I also adore the colors she captures.

I also love trying to guess which locale each photo was shot in . . .

While you can never actually see people in any of her images, there is such a welcoming feeling! Like that perfectly still moment before everyone gets up in the morning . . .

So which is your favorite?

Dining Room Layout: Cozy Banquettes

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Dining banquettes have a way of making any eating area feel special - they are just so cozy and inviting {I don't know about you, but I always want to sit the booth at a restaurant!} They offer a fantastic alternative to the traditional, expected layout of a table with a set of 6 or 8 dining chairs and I love the softness they add to dining rooms and eat-in kitchens, which can often be a bit hard. Plus, banquettes are actually wonderful for small spaces, allowing extra guests to crowd in when needed! And I know it might seem scary to have this much upholstery in a dining room or kitchen, but using an indoor-outdoor fabric is a great way to prevent worry over any spills or stains.

Banquettes to the rescue - a perfect example of turning a cramped corner into a cozy eating nook. And I love the organic-mod styling!

Too cute not to share! Plus what a great use of stools as opposed to chairs on the end.

Eclectic and charming - note the cleaver storage below the seating too!

Modern, fresh and paired down.

While I do love the built-in variety, free standing banquettes with high backs can work just as well. And for a quick fix, try a simple bench placed against the wall with loads of cushions like above {just be sure to secure the feet with anti-slip stoppers so the bench does not go slipping away from the wall!} Here is great DIY if you are up for it!

Wish List: Clinton Friedman's Botanical Photos

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

We still have a few very blank walls in our apartment, and I have been eyeing these amazing succulent prints from West Elm in collaboration with artist Clinton Friedman. I love how they are a fresh and modern take on old fashioned, hand drawn botanical prints. Plus the soft, watery colors are so pretty while the prickly subject matter keeps them a bit cool and tough - a great combo. And lastly I love the oversized scale of these photos, a set of 4 of them makes for such a bold statement!

This vignette above is so casual, natural and chic - and the succulent photos look so great as part of a larger gallery wall!

The Clinton Friedman photos are not badly priced at all and come framed, but when you consider we need 4 of them and have to pay for shipping to Singapore, I think these guys are out of the question. But I still love the inspiration, so here are a few solutions I found . . .

These oversized photographs by Italian Etsy shop Due Alberi might be a lovely substitute - a bit more delicate, but the rich indigo and crisp white color contrast is so pretty!

And I love the dreamy quality of these photos from Notes From the Field too! {And they will custom print almost any size you want!}

Or this Southwest succulent print is also really wonderful {what a great touch of peach!}

What do you think? Do you like this look?
Are any of these options as cool as the originals?
